Never again…Never.

May 31, 2011  |  Posted by   |  Tags: Letters, Perspective  |  8 Comments

As I sat on my front porch this morning, reading the paper and enjoying my first cup of coffee for the day, I could not help but feel a certain sense of gratitude for the freedom I take for granted every day.

I have had the privilege of living in this great country for the last 9 years, and even though I am fiercely proud to be Canadian, feelings of patriotism and adoration for my new homeland were overwhelming this morning.

After spending the weekend doing the normal “get ready for summer” stuff around the house and enjoying the last three days of family barbecues and abundance – it really hit home.

Without the price of freedom that was paid, and continues to be paid, none of this would be possible.

From the first explorers who decided that the status quo was a far worse choice than the peril of setting out to sea without a GPS – let alone the knowledge that the earth was round – to our forefathers who built this country from scratch with their hands. And to the price paid on the battlefield, in blood, so that our freedom could not only be possible, but ensured.

As Miki came outside this morning, grabbing her little flag out of the flower pot, waving it fiercely, I could not help but feel a rush of gratitude for the freedom my family has to live the life of our dreams. And, not only to live the life of our dreams, but also for the distinct privilege of helping to wake others up to the possibility of living theirs as well.

Thank you God for the gift of freedom. For freedom from oppression, hardship, and persecution. Thank you for the opportunity to live a life fulfilled. Let us never again forget that this freedom is a privilege, not a right. It’s a privilege paid for dearly by countless individuals far braver than myself. This is a gift that I promise will never again take for granted.

I love my country. I would’nt want to be any other place. This is a gift of Freedom and privilege. Every time I see our men and women, what they go through, I think how brave they are and how they do this for us, I’m grateful.

    Dear Jay,

Thank you for your “Never again…Never

  5. Thanks God & God Bless America. Words that we don’t seem to hear as much anymore. Nevertheless they are something I carry in my heart and soul. I’ve have truly been blessed by these freedoms. And yes these freedoms are privileges. Privileges that at one point in my life I took advantage of. We have so many gifts in this country that we tend to overlook them all of the time. However it is by these gifts & Gods grace that today I can really appreciate and see the beauty of this wonderful country we all call The United States of America..
    Take Care & God Bless…

  6. I feel the same..the thought of wishing someone HAPPY memorial day didn’t seem to fit. It’s about honor, commitment and mostly for THANKSGIVING, that we have been blessed with the choice to be free.
    God Bless Us All

Jay, your words were very much to the point and can be applied in many countries, including here in Australia, where we celebrate such memories on Anzac Day.
Tha sad thing is, mankind just doesn’t seem to learn from the horrors of the past.
Here’s to freedom and the future!
Thanks again Jay for your brilliant foresight.

  8. Jay,
You are Blessed! Thank you God – Without Jay I couldn’t have been here. I also Love my country The United Republic of Tanzania. When I look at my people moving around desperately I cry for them… I wish they could all see my website and become my LEADS!!! The cry for oppression, hardships and persecution could come to an end. Thank you again for this opportunity. I am still learning no matter what the price till I get my FREEDOM. Never Again … Never

    May God Bless you.
